The Uno-X travel guide to Bilbao
Hello, Gaizka here!
I’m a Basque native mechanic on the Uno-X Pro Cycling team. I'm reaching out to all "txirrindulari zaleak" (cycling supporters) from my home, the city of Bilbao.
It's a historical moment for us as our Norwegian/Danish team prepares to pedal in the Tour de France for the first time ever. And this year, the grand tour kicks off right here in Bilbao!
Here's my guide to help you make the most of your stay in our beautiful city.
First, let's dive into Bilbao's captivating sights.
The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is a marvel of modern architecture, covered in shimmering titanium and hosting an impressive collection of contemporary art. Adjacent is the elegant La Salve Bridge.
For a dose of tradition, explore Casco Viejo, the old city, with its cobblestone streets, charming boutiques, and the heart of the district, the Santiago Cathedral.
Bilbao has a hidden gem tucked away between the buildings, the Basilica of Begoña.
From a particular tile in one the street Pelota, which got it´s name because people used to play "eskupelota" (basque main sport) against the wall surrounding the old town, you can look up and see a spectacular view of the Basilica of Begoña framed perfectly between the roofs. It's a star view that locals and tourists alike cherish.
As a mechanic and cycling enthusiast, I'd be remiss if I didn't suggest some scenic cycling routes near the city.
Start with the 60 km round trip ride from Bilbao to Gaztelugatxe, an islet on the coast of Biscay.
This route takes you through beautiful coastal roads and you can visit the famous Gaztelugatxe chapel, perched atop a rocky islet. For fans of the series Game of Thrones, this spot doubles as a treat, as it was featured as Dragonstone in the series. This is also a good spot to watch stage 1 of the tour for those who want combine sightseeing and watching the biggest stars fly up the hill.
There's a viewpoint near the hermitage that offers a breathtaking view of the rugged coastline and the bridge that zig-zags up to the chapel.
For the adventurers among you, the Basque Coast isn't just about stunning views, it's also a popular spot for surfing. Towns like Mundaka and Sopelana, easily accessible from Bilbao, are known for their strong surf culture and excellent waves.
Whether you're a pro or a beginner, you can rent a board and hit the waves for an exhilarating experience.
Now, let's talk food.
Basque cuisine is world-renowned, and Bilbao is its epicenter. Begin your culinary journey with pintxos, our version of tapas. Bar-hopping in the old town is the best way to try a variety. For a traditional Basque meal, try bacalao al pil-pil, a dish of salt cod, olive oil, garlic, and chilli. Pair it with idiazabal cheese and txakoli wine for a true Basque dining experience.
In the spirit of the Tour de France and local tradition, I must also mention the Basque beret, or txapela.
It's a proud symbol of our heritage, often personalized with custom embroidery.
Get your own txapela embroidered with your name or a unique design as a keepsake from this historic event.
Finally, in Bilbao and the Basque Country, we have our own language called Euskara. It's not like English or Spanish; it's unique, just like us! So, when you come here, you'll hear lots of new words.
The Tour de France is a celebration of not just cycling, but also of culture and community. As we prepare to host the grand start of the Tour, I can't wait to share the charm and tradition of Bilbao and the Basque Country.
In a nutshell, Bilbao is a city full of surprises, just waiting for you to explore and enjoy!
